Lightning Talk: Extreme Mobility: How one highly-scalable mobile app sends a billion people on their way each year
oin to learn how China’s 1 billion seasonal commuters relied on a single mobile application that overcame these challenges to get their destinations with ease and comfort. China Ministry of Railways successfully developed and deployed a highly-scalable mobile ticketing application that can mitigate unparalleled user levels, extreme transactional spikes, ticket scalping security challenges and ultimately get people on their way at the speed of a touch-click.

Each year, the world's largest mass migration occurs during Chinese New Year, when more than a billion people travel across China to celebrate the Spring Festival with family. The widespread adoption of smart mobile devices has had a transformational effect on this unique event, as one-seventh of the world's population are in motion simultaneously. This session describes the successful deployment of a highly-scalable mobile app that helps the China Ministry of Railways cope with the massive spike in demand during the 'Chunyun period' by allowing hundreds of millions of travelers to quickly and easily book rail tickets. Despite China's considerable ongoing investment in rail infrastructure, every available train seat is sold out during those 40 days of collective chaos. As a result, scalping of tickets is just one of the many challenges that the designers of the mobile app solution (based on IBM’s MobileFirst Platform) have had to confront. This session provides valuable insight for any organizations planning mobile solutions that must scale to support millions – or billions – of customers.

Lightning Talk: Shoring up the Mobile Network – Why Security Matters in Mobile
Gary Davis will provide a provocative session on a topic that is forward looking and gaining momentum as much as the mobile tech ecosystem is growing. Due to the nomadic nature of mobile devices, we need to change the way people think about security. We are and should be worried about where data is going. The evolution to and around mobile devices and social media has created a desensitization around data; anything and everything is shared on Facebook, posted from a mobile phone, for example. There is a generational component to this, but the over 30 crowd is equally effusive on social media sites and mobile devices. People don’t realize what is stored in a phone. As we think about security we have to think about how people are using computing & devices. This discussion with a unique and dynamic expert executive will explore how the social & cultural changes of mobile communications impact security. How and where does security fit? Corporate assets have to be protected. Most employees use their own personal phone. How do companies deal with and reconcile competing perspectives on protecting data? Start-ups in particular must be sensitive to the risk to their IP due to a lack of awareness around mobile security. Davis will open a valuable dialogue on this crucial part of any discussion on the explosion of growth in the mobile tech space.

Lightning Talk: iBeacons: Reality or Still a Work in Progress?
All the buzz, iBeacons are the darlings of micro-location technology. But how easy and scaleable are iBeacons? Are they being used in actual implementations? What’s the hype and what’s reality? What are the privacy concerns? And do consumers even want iBeacons and location-based promotions?

This session takes a look at the current state of iBeacons – and what the future holds. Hear real use cases from how professional sports organizations engage with fans in stadiums, to how major retail brands can target in-store shoppers with messages and discounts through their apps. Consider the results from an Adobe survey of consumers and marketers:
 34% of consumers surveyed report receiving location-based promotions; 70% are open to receiving them
 18% of marketers surveyed use iBeacons today; expected to double in 2015

Attendees will:
1) Learn how iBeacons make smartphones and apps smart, how brands can integrate location-based technologies/apps, and how consumer adoption is trending
2) Understand how major brands are using this technology to execute smart marketing while avoiding "consumer stalking"
3) Review some results that today’s brands/organizations are seeing with iBeacon deployments
4) Hear some research findings from Adobe, indicating that app usage growth on phones outpaced tablets by more than two times (70% vs. 35%) year-over-year
This will be a lively session debating the upsides and the gotchas with iBeacons.

KEYNOTE: News, Information, and the Distributed Digital Ecosystem '
Doug Vance was named VP of Product Development for ABC News in 2011. In this role he is responsible for product growth and strategy for ABC News digital properties including ABCNews.com, GoodMorningAmerica.com, mobile apps, OTT, and other emerging platforms.

Since joining ABC News, Vance has played a central role in several product launches, including ABC News’ 2015 launch on Xbox One as the first U.S. news app as well as the groundbreaking debut on Apple TV in 2014. Both applications offer immediate access to live, multi-streaming video and on-demand content, entertainment news, live hourly updates, original programming and video highlights from ABC News Programs.

In 2013 under Vance’s leadership, ABC News successfully introduced the applauded refresh to the ABC News iPhone and Android apps, featuring personalized push alerts and an inbox within the app, allowing users to star the stories they care about most and get updates directly to their inbox.

Ahead of the 2012 Presidential election, Vance helped launch the redesigned ABC News App for the iPad, which delivers around-the-clock news coverage, video content and exclusive interviews to users with three distinct dayparted editions – morning, afternoon and evening. Additionally, Vance launched a mobile app suite featuring geo-targeted push alerts and notifications for iPhone, Android and iPad users. Vance also oversaw the enhanced live stream experience and worked with Storify and polling partners to create a more social viewing experience for users throughout the 2012 Election.

He has also extended ABC News to the Kindle Fire and Windows 8 platforms and built partnerships with a variety of innovative startups such as Urban Airship, Chute, Optimizely, and ScribbleLive.

Workshop: Hand off final app designs effectively using Sympli
The process of the handing off final designs from a mobile application designer to a developer is not straight-forward. It requires a lot of manual jobs from designers on assets generation, mastering of visual specs, as well as collecting and sending to the developers any custom fonts that will be needed by the developers to implement the design. Some things get missed, and both parties waste their time on unnecessary back-and-forth communications instead of doing the respective jobs they love.

Tailored specially for mobile designers and developers, Sympli aims to make design handoff virtually a one-click-process in both Photoshop and Sketch 3. It takes care of transforming original source graphic files into a format that mobile developers can use right away.

Sympli's Android Studio and XCode extensions provide ready-to-use assets, dynamic visual specifications in platform-specific units, synchronization tools, tracking of design updates, and routine code generation to dramatically ease the developers' job of giving the apps a final look.

Keynote: Digital Discovery in the Physical World
The ubiquitous smartphones users carry are powerful, smart devices that can be leveraged as a valuable tool to digitally navigate the increasingly clustered physical world in an individualized way. If a user agrees, the various sensors allow for the acquisition of key signals that can then be layered upon one another to paint a personalized picture of what someone is likely to be interested in. We particularly believe in the value allotted by anonymous location and proximity information. Combined properly, this creates a digital “sixth-sense”, creating the best bridge between the digital and physical world.

Increasingly these devices are being used as ambient tools that proactively push engagements to assist during the user’s journey or buying cycle. Beacons are an important piece to this equation as they can be triggered to provide engagements based on very granular, focused criteria ensuring they are hyper relevant; performing significantly better than traditional mediums. Beacons help to understand this bridge and take the mobile context and translate it to enable retailers, brands, venues, advertisers and municipality services to create relevant conversations with users at different points in their journey.

As a thought leader and pioneer in the industry, Kevin Hunter will explain this transformative view on a user's journey, the endless possible use cases and how to leverage these tools effectively in an increasingly connected world.

Lightning Talk: IRL Dating App-- via NewAer's LE Bluetooth Technology
Based on The New York Times, there are 30,000 Craigslist "missed connections" in NYC alone. Lori will discuss how she turned her "real life" dating card business into the newly launched app which allows users to solve missed connections with a new technology that was not available when the patented Cheekd idea was launched in 2010.

The new Cheekd ensures you ‘Never Miss a Connection’; the app works on the train; on a plane… anywhere—You’ll get a notification if someone who meets your criteria is within 30 feet of you. If you’re near a potential spark, Cheekd makes sure you know about it.

Panel: Imagining a 100% Mobile World
Is "mobile" an extension of the desktop or will it eventually replace the desktop as our main connection to the cloud of activity? Every year, more apps are not just mobile-first, they are mobile-only without a desktop version at all. This is because - at any moment - there are more people connected in real-time via mobile device than on desktops - forming a Human Cloud. As mobile devices get smarter, will we work and live primarily on mobile devices? How and why are many current apps mobile-only and ignoring the desktop completely?
